THE New South Wales Coalition has promised to set up a new brothel licensing authority to crackdown on illegal operations, in an effort to clean up the industry.

Working with local councils, a Coalition government would establish a Brothel Licensing Authority which would be charged with ensuring legal brothels comply with the law, while stamping out illegal businesses.

A new annual brothel licensing fee will pay for the increased scrutiny of council inspectors, Opposition intergovernmental relations spokesman Chris Hartcher said.

If the Coalition wins the March 2011 state election, it has also promised tougher vetting of brothel licence applications to weed out operations linked to organised crime.

“Illegal brothels are not legitimate businesses which have been licensed and regulated and are properly controlled – they are illegal establishments which exist because our councils don’t have enough powers to stop them and because the Keneally Labor Government failed to act,” Mr Hartcher has said.

“Legal operations need tight regulation and illegal operations need to be shut down.”
