Getting on Top of Decriminalisation for the NSW Sex Industry
This document explains in easy to understand language decriminalisation and its impact on the NSW sex industry and the way we work in it. It’s a brilliant paper to begin with if you’re not quite sure of how and why NSW works the way it does and want to learn about the key concepts we discuss on this site. Thanks to Rachel and Scarlet Alliance for allowing us to place it on the site ![]()

Richard Smyth’s article in NSW Planner 2011 “Use and abuse of Development Control Plans (DCPs)
Mr.Richard Smyth (town planner) article published in the NSW Planner 2011 critiquing the role of councils in developing overly restrictive development control plans (DCP) and how they use these DCPs to override their Local Environment Plans (LEP) when their LEP provisions appear to support, what some councillors consider ‘unpalatable’ developments. This includes brothels and Muslim prayer halls. Richard also identifies, with concern, how the Land & Environment Court (LEC) gives much greater status to a DCP than was ever intended.

The Sex Industry in Western Australia: A Report to the Western Australian Government
This report is important not only to sex workers in WA, but is also a report we refer to when lobbying for legislation in different States including NSW. It helps to inform us on the effects of criminalisation/decriminalisation, regulation, health, access to services for sex workers and other important issues that sex workers must deal with on a daily basis. It is one of many outcomes of the LASH Project .

The Sex Industry in NSW: A Report to the NSW Ministry of Health
The study examined whether restrictive prostitution laws and policing practices adversely affect the health and welfare of sex workers within the three differing legislative frameworks in Australia. It is the NSW Report of the LASH Project. As with the WA Report above, this report will be used across Australia for lobbying and to inform the sex working community.

The International HIV/AIDS Alliance (the Alliance) and the Commonwealth HIV & AIDS Action Group (CHAAG)_ Briefing: HIV and the Law
This briefing paper was used by organisations like the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations (AFAO) and others to lobby Law Ministers at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in WA this year. The briefing paper is of great use to NAUWU and others lobbying for sex worker rights because it is very specific about sex work needing to be decriminalised and recognised as a legitimate occupation.

Discussion Paper: Revolutionizing HIV Prevention and Maximising Treatment Impact in Australia_Bill Whittaker_2011
This discussion paper was delivered as part of a presentation by Bill Whittaker about the implications of the 2011 UN Political Declaration on HIV for the domestic HIV response in Australia. it contains information stating that there should be a “supportive policy and legal framework” which NAUWU advocated and lobbies for and also states that part of a successful strategy is the ongoing use of community and peer education frameworks, that they should be continued and enhanced. NAUWU will use this paper to assist us in our ongoing lobbying efforts in helping to educate and advocate for peer education and support as well as the realities of HIV in the sex working community.

The amount of money that I have turned over in my twenty five years in the industry … and yet … we cannot get a home loan or any advice offered other than chicken little’s running around saying that the sky is falling …I will retire soon and wonder what in the hell I was ever thinking …the public respect me??? =
Train me into another job? = A joke!
How hard can a human being do it in life and then be told to do it harder???
Thanks for your comment Beccy-Babe!
Trust me I know where you’re coming from and I think and feel much the same way you do
I’ve paid off 3 people’s units in the time I’ve been renting in the last 10 years and they would have been million dollar mortagages, but because I’m a sex worker I’m not allowed my own. It’s not that I can’t afford to pay a home off, it’s that no-one will let me have a home!
Keep on keeping on Beccy and I’ll have HUGE happy thoughts for you,
